Ewen Maddock Dam, One Year On!

Ewen Maddock Dam, One Year On!
How time flies. It’s been just over a year since Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc. released close to 30 000 native fish fingerlings into Ewen Maddock Dam in its inaugural year. The last time the lake had been stocked was a decade ago where trophy sized Australian Bass over 55cm can still be caught from the efforts of EMFMI predecessors. Other native fish such as Golden, Silver and Spangled Perch along with Saratoga also call Ewen Maddock home with the fish stocking group also hoping to stock Mary River Cod into the lake when they become available.
The fish stocking group have just released as many fish fingerlings again this year into Ewen Maddock Dam and have also, only recently, taken on the responsibility of re-stocking Baroon Pocket Dam which also saw its first lot of fish fingerlings released into the lake since the year 2000.
Every month EMFMI meet socially to fish either Ewen Maddock or Baroon Pocket Dam, fishing through the morning after an early start and firing up the BBQ by lunch, telling a few yarns. Last weekend was no different, except due to the group’s busy schedule, it had been some time since the group had fished Ewen Maddock Dam. With last year’s fish fingerlings now being of a size to target, EMFMI purposely set out to see if their hard work to raise funds for these fish fingerlings had been worth it. When the fingerlings were released 12 months ago they were only 30mm long, those same fish now range from 150mm to 200mm in length and took a liking to bait presentations and to hard bodied lures. 20 Bass and 15 Perch were caught and released for the morning’s session and all fish looked to be very healthy which is very encouraging.
EMFMI members are extremely excited at the prospect of both fisheries being a draw card for anglers in the very near future.
If you are interested in becoming a member of EMFMI, or would like to sponsor the group in any way or just want to know their meeting times or calendar of events, you can contact the fish stocking group via their website. www.ewenmaddock.com.au

My first paddle since christmas, and it was a lovely day, overcast with just enough breeze to keep it very pleasant.
Lure type and colour didn't seem to matter all that much, I got 4 bass and 2 spangled on 4 different size and colour lures ranging from a silver CD1 through to a gold micro mullet. Ferg got 6 bass on lures ranging from a 35mm gold scorpion to a 70mm silver popper! Dave's photo's show a wide lure selection as well.

They sure hit hard for little bass, gave me quite a good time on the 1-2 kilo bream rod. I can safely say that even in the 15 to 20cm range, Bass still go harder than legal bream!
