Title: Where to find tarpon (IPSWICH)
Post by: kikrman on January 20, 2014, 12:41:18 PM
Hey guys don't know if this is the right section, but I've been trying to catch a tarpon with no success. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'll be land based and located in Ipswich so the closer the better.

Cheers

ive caught them in the Brissie river about a klm downstream from Mt Crosby Weir ,its been a while since ive been down there but it wasn't too hard to walk the bank ,I got them in the spot where theres a couple of big boulders in the river.if you have access to a boat or kayak theres a few around Johnsons rock sometimes too :thumbsup

You can get them at the rocks at Shapcott Park canoe launching ramp, under the Bridge at Brassall, David Trumpy Bridge occasionally & they turn up randomly anywhere down from there to the Junction.

Ok cheers for that I'm going to head to the weir and walk down a bit during the week see how i go there, but it will be strictly land based unfortunately. I'll give Shapcott Park park a crack also. I was having a look through some old posts and the bridge and pipe at colleges was meant to be good as well?

Thanks for the tips I'll let you know how i go.

Used to get them downstream of old Mt Crosby wier. Back then the go to lure was the lightning bug, a simple jighead with some silver sparkleflash tied on for a body and a white or yellow deer hair tail, all tied like a fly. Other wise tiny mullet caught in a minnow trap and fished under a cheap ass float or polystyrene block rigged as live bait on a single hook.

Give me a ring Luke if you don't do any good on foot, you can borrow a yak and a collection bag a lot easier  ;)

Hey efc were you cast netting near the ramp? Destroyed my cast net at coomera the other week so it looks like I'll be repairing it over the weekend

No from my kayak back towards colleges. I've tried catching tarpon by rod and reel but between the catties, bass and sharks I've had no luck.

Ohok no dramas. For a fish that's in numbers through our waterways they are proving to be very hard to come by atm  :o. I had a few casts at the weir, colleges and kookaburra early this morn and picked up a nice 45cm+ flatty
