Changed river levels for the Mowamba River

The NSW Office of Water today issued a ‘rising river alert’ for the Mowamba River between the Mowamba Weir to the junction with the Snowy River.
Changed river levels are expected to commence on Thursday, May 1 2014, and continue for 6 weeks until Friday, 11June 2014. During this time all inflows will “overtop” the Mowamba Weir and flow down the Mowamba River.
If average inflow conditions occur during this release period, then flows are likely to be about 95 to 120 ML day.
Flows are expected to remain in channel and landholders in the immediate vicinity below Mowamba Weir are advised to take all necessary precautions with stock, fencing and property.
Should heavy rainfall occur during this period, river heights are expected to be higher.
The NSW Office of Water is undertaking a trial of passing tributary inflows from the Mowamba River to the regulated Snowy River as part of the 2014/15 Snowy Flow Response Monitoring and Modelling program.
The aim of this release, which is being undertaken in cooperation with Snowy Hydro Limited, is aimed at building a better understanding of the how unregulated river inflows could benefit the health of the regulated Snowy River in the Jindabyne Gorge.
The proposed trial is designed to assess the delivery of Dissolver Organic Carbon (as basic food resource) which influences the bottom of the aquatic food chain in the Snowy River in the Jindabyne Gorge.
