Contract awarded for Wyangala upgrade

Wyangala DamThe next phase of the Wyangala Dam safety upgrade will go ahead thanks to a strong working relationship between the NSW Government, the local Wyangala community, State Water Corporation and Boorowa and Cowra Shire Councils.
NSW Minister for Primary Industries Katrina Hodgkinson today announced the $25 million construction project, which will include a bridge and road to link Darby’s Falls Road and Trout Farm Road, has been awarded to John Holland
The new bridge and road will provide continued access to Wyangala village once the third stage of the upgrade project is underway and access across the top of the dam is restricted.
“Since 2009 I have supported efforts to find a suitable access alternative for the people of Wyangala,” Ms Hodgkinson said.
“State Water has worked with the Boorowa and Cowra Shire Councils and the Wyangala community to deliver this access with the dam safety upgrade.
“The dam safety upgrade works will enable Wyangala Dam to safely pass an extreme flood event and ensure the safety of those downstream.”
The works to construct the bridge and road downstream of the dam have been combined with the second phase of safety upgrade works for cost efficiency, State Water project manager Kock Ooi said.
“Following raising of the spillway walls in the first stage of safety upgrade works we are constructing a gate raising and locking system to enable the dam to better withstand extreme floods,” Mr Ooi said.
Up to 25 jobs are expected to be created through construction with additional economic benefits likely for surrounding towns.
“John Holland has successfully completed a number of other stage one dam safety upgrades for State Water, completing works on time and on budget and using local suppliers and subcontractors,” Mr Ooi said.
Construction is scheduled to commence late in January 2013 and be complete by mid 2014.
