Somerset - New launching point at top of the lake
« on: September 30, 2014, 10:46:14 PM »
Went to check out the new lanuching point at the top of Lake Somerset last week.

It is located on Westvale Road. (see map below).

This is a brand new facility and looks pretty good (don't they all when they're new?)
There is a concrete boat ramp, bitumen car parking, parking for cars with trailers and a toilet.

I would think that the ramp wont extend far into the water, so may turn to a mud hole when the lake drops to lower levels, but will still be suitable for paddle craft.

Access is 6am to 6pm and lets hope nobody vandalises this much needed and long overdue access point, OR goes cutting fences.

It is also worth noting that where the power boats get all the priority down the front of the lake, paddlers should be given priority up the top. There is now a 6 knot speed limit (enforceable) in the whole top of Somerset from the start of the tree line just north of Kirkleagh Recreation Area.

There are a few pictures attached below to show what the area & ramp look like from land and from the water.

Note. Westvale Road is a dirt road with sharp turns, so should be avoided in wet weather s othe roads don't get ripped up. Don't want the locals off side. Also there is often cattle on the road so drive slowly & keep an eye out.

Cheers,

Am thinking of going up here middle of this week with my young son. I didn't realise it was a dirt road, would it be ok to take a station wagon down there. How long from ippy.  Thanks guys. Andy

Used it yesterday, it is in top condition, road surface looked a little greasy after the rain, but wasn't. No worries with your station wagon.
Only problem is the ski lice who are now using it. 2 of them yesterday ripping around, including towing kids on one of those manta ray type things. Insane with the amount of timber in there.

Safe to say the 6 knot speed limit was being ignored , guess the rangers don't get overtime on the long weekend to police it !

Years ago I saw the same,  pulling kids through where you would not even go. Told them how shallow and how many stumps there are. Told me to #### ### etc. now I just let natural selection take its course.

It's not the rangers job to enforce state law, it's Boating & Fisheries patrol who enforce gazetted speed limits on water. As always, take photos &/or video of offenders and post it up here for all to see.

I spotted the Boating and fisheries 4wd towing a trailer with 2 jet skis on it in Fernvale around 9am on Saturday. They where headed outbound. BigW, Somerset or akky dam could of been their destination I guess. So they are on patrol. They can't be everywhere at once.

Fisheries must have been doing the big tour over the long weekend...........seen them at Forest Hill about 8 Sunday morning......I'm guessing Dyer was their next stop.

Sent photos including rego's to SEQ Water contact email on their web site. Didn't even get a response. Would have at least expected a  "we don't deal with it sent it to ...."

As Steve says natural selection, but with kids, I felt I had to do something.
