Baroon Pocket 20/1/12
« on: January 20, 2012, 01:01:25 PM »
Went back to see if any of the fingerlings we put in yesterday were big enough to catch yet.  ::)

Good to see only 1 hungry looking shag hanging around the area we put the fingerlings in.

Dam is up about 1.5m since I last fished there on Monday, was not sure what the day would bring.

Plan was initially to pepper the newly flooded flats with poppers, no go. (except for the savage suicidal spangled perch)
Then managed to retrieve all my shrimp traps, luckily the whole traps were suspended by the floats. They had a reasonable amount of shrimp in them as well so that was good.
Anchored up in our normal spot, spent an hour there for nothing. Even tried floating live shrimp over the newly sunken grass for zip.

Decided to give another good old bait spot a shot. Behind the first point east of the Maleny end Boat ramp.

Anchored up , mucked about a bit adjusting the anchor ropes as the wind was up a bit, to ensure we hit the magic 6m depth mark and we were on to fish straight away. Ended up with 12 bass and 3 tandanus before we ran out of shrimp. Left them biting. Bass in this area were noticeably smaller, averaging low 30's.

I've never caught a bass on a worm there, but I've only tried a few times.
In the old days before the Dam mobs started setting their own rules on bringing in live bait, salt water yabbies used to work well.

There is a lot of water between mature fish there, This year the few that remain have been showing up in the old spots we used to catch them years ago when they were plentiful, areas I have not caught fish for a few years. I've done very well visiting the old haunts during my holidays, only got a week left, hopefully I can get a few more.
