Comment sought on use of SW dams and lakes
Friday, 1 May 2015 - WA Dept of Transport

Review to ensure safe aquatic use of six dams and lakes in South West

The growing number of people using popular dams and lakes in the South-West for aquatic activities are being urged to participate in a review of use at key locations.

Visiting Wellington Dam today, Transport Minister Dean Nalder said the Department of Transport was conducting a formal review of aquatic use at six dams and lakes in the South-West as part of its responsibility for managing waterways throughout Western Australia.

Mr Nalder said activities at Wellington, Glen Mervyn, Stockton Open Cut, Logue Brook and Waroona dams and Lake Towerrinning were the initial focus of a State-wide review.

“Increasingly, dams and lakes are being used for activities such as water skiing, jet skiing and other boating.  We are engaging the boating community and other users to develop safe and sustainable plans to cater for the large number of activities,” he said.

As part of the review, users are invited to comment on the existing management arrangements at each location and suggest changes to enhance the use of the area.

Specific feedback is being sought about proposed changes at Glen Mervyn Dam where it has been suggested that the water ski area be permanently replaced with a jet ski freestyle area.

The department will also liaise with key stakeholders at each location to seek their input.

“We’re looking forward to your feedback by the end of May.  It’s envisaged the outcomes of the reviews will be implemented at each location before the end of the year,” the Minister said.
