Freshwater camping spots in North QLD
« on: September 30, 2010, 01:40:30 PM »
Hi All

Starting to plan our Christmas holidays & am looking at heading north for a few weeks. The plan is to head up the coast with stops at Boyne Island, Airlie Beach, Mission Beach, Cairns & then Tinaroo. We have friends & camping spots sorted up to Cairns, but am keen to find out some info on the best spots to camp at Tinaroo or surrounding sweetwater spots. We are planning on spending five nights at Tinaroo & then head down to either Fairburn or Theresa Creek dams on our way home. So if someone can help with the best camping area at Tinaroo & any advise on the dams on the way home that would be great. Will be towing the tinnie & carrying a kayak.

Cheers Andrew

Mate there's a gazillion different spots you can hit in those miles.

Last time up around Cairns, driving up the hill to Atheron I took a detour off the highway to a little camping spot along a creek. I doubt there's any fish bigger than Rainbowfish but was a beatiful spot to stop at. I've got some pics & video here somewhere, I'll post em up.

You've just gotta drop the yak into the upper Barron River at Lake Placid and have a flick there. I dont profess to know alot about the region, but I'd bet money there's Sooties & Junglies in the headwaters of almost every creek & river up that way. Barron, Mulgrave, Tully, Johnstone, Herbert, Mossman.

Depending on rain & rivers; you could consider swinging inland at Townsville & hitting the river around Charters Towers then swing down towards Theresa Creek (also Hoods Lagoon),  Redclaw Central (Lake Maraboon / Fairbairn Dam) & even take a little detour east to to Bundoora Dam/German Creek Dam for some saratoga.
I've did a presentation called Fishing The Inland Barra Track last year. It shows points to fish & road distances. Will see if I can dig it up, you could back track it from CT south along the Gregory Developement Hwy. Be sure to drop into the Mt Coolon Pub for a frosty if you're on the Bowen Dev Rd.

Cheers,

Fitz..

Just don't go downstream from there, deifnately don't go past the bridge!!!  :o

Upstream is AWESOME. See if you can get dropped off in the kayak up the road towards the power station a bit & shoot some pools / flick your way down. Only if its not running hard tho, then its probably suicide.
At Lake Placid you can hand feed the junglies/sooties apparently.

G'day Andrew

Can't help out much, However I was at Theresa Creek Dam on the weekend just gone and it is chockers, flowing over.

Apparently the water was a bit cool for any quality fish and the redclaw were rather quiet as well. In saying that it's a beautiful place to set up camp for a while. Great shaded BBQ areas, Toilets & Hot showers, Fires OK, Shop/kiosk.

Cheers
Jono
