Title: End of Barra season Pre 50th AWOL Trip
Post by: Jim_Tait on November 07, 2014, 09:42:06 AM
I'm turning 50 in November this year - so milking the event for all its worth got my better half to agree to give me a couple of weeks AWOL with some good bros from way back before the barra season ended. We travelled from northern NSW via central Qld to my old NQ stamping ground including my home river the Burdekin, its floodplain drainages including Barratta Creek and the Herbert and also included a nice little JP creek on a property I share north of Townsville - to say we had a fat time is an understatement  :thumbsup We caught a million sooties, some nice JPs, freshwater Jacks, tarpon and barra including a 90cm fish of the trip. Its nice to see barra in a clear upper Burdekin river - though I think most fish owe their presence their to stocking rather than effective functioning of the Clare Weir fish ladder - more work to be done... in other systems catch was dominated by good numbers of small barra and finding keepers over the 58 cm mark was a challenge - but fun! Most of my mates are foodies so we tried to outdo each other in the culinary stakes which also extended to fresh wild pork! Stand out lure across species and sites were Z man 3 inch Minnowz in 'Opening Night' colour pattern
