Now at 140 % plus and in crisis mode!!!! Hope the experts know what they are doing..... She's full to the very brim and still pouring down rain across the central west! Matt Hansen

I wonder how many stocked fish go over the wall under those conditions?

What are the experts doing? I'm not sure that they can make it stop raining. At 140%, I'm guessing that water if flowing over the wall. If it's not, it's rating sounds very similar to lake Wivenhoe. When they had the panic release from there in October it was at 47% of it's actual capacity, but 100% of the official capacity. If there is excess capacity, it's there for flood mitigation, and should be used for such. Not like at Wivenhoe where they hit the panic button and flooded houses in Brisbane. In stocked impoundments a certain percentage of fish will go over the wall, that's one of the reasons we put more in each year. 12 to 15 years ago overflowing dams were the norm. We didn't have everybody running around saying the sky is falling then though because it was accepted.

Dale, I'm sure the experts would have plenty to do at this time including closer monitoring of inflow, calculating timed releases to minimise damage, closely monitoring rainfall by the minute across the catchement area, etc. I think this ones a bit of a special case seeing as the 25 million dollar upgrade of the wall is still being finished!
Burrendong does have a large flood mitigation portion above the 100% mark, and it is used as such.
As for people running around saying the sky is falling.... havn't heard that one yet, but you might well have a differnet circle of friends to me.....

I haven't been to Burrendong for a few years now. It was ariund 40% I think at the time and was a huge body of water then. Must look pretty impressive at the moment.

Good to see Burrendong full again, it has been over the wall quite a few times now, and that is good for the river too.
There is water running down all the Central West rivers and Creeks, most of it will get into the Murray Darling.
Been a long time since we have seen this much rain over such a wide area, but it is not the first time either, and it wont be the last!

Fingers crossed that some water does make it past the endless irrigation fields to the Coorong.
It's a shame that many use the "health" of the river & its flora / fauna all so they can get more water released from other areas, so they can get a higher extraction amount downstream.

It's just a shame that the rain had to come now and not 4 weeks later after the cockies have finally had a chance to get a good crop off for the year. 10 years of drought and now this, but then they'll always tell you the only way to break a drought is with a flood. Maybe they should have said after harvest.....
