Mary River
« on: October 26, 2011, 08:28:32 PM »
I've done a couple of trips down the Mary recently with some good sessions of 20 or so  Bass on a variety of lures as well as fly,the river is looking great atm with good visability and plenty of structure, most fish around the mid 30's to low to mid forties with the odd bigger fish thrown in.

The Tiaro Land Care Catch and Release Comp is on this weekend for anyone interested and you can contact tiarolandcare@bigpond.com if you want more info.

Here's a few pics

Good to hear the river is looking healthy - What is the fly in the bass's mouth is it some kind of polar fibre minnow ? A bit small on the screen. Cheers Pat.

Nice lookin fish there mate. Sounds a bit more like a wild only population with the sort of size range your getting.

Pat it's a boney bream pattern I've been tieing for years it works really well on Bass and Barra.

Brett no mate they would come from Lake Macdonald, Borumba and Baroon pkt dams in flood times but there has been bass in there for many many years so some may/would be wild fish.

It's a great spot and there's a good camping spot at Tairo at Petrie Park.

a couple of schools of 4-5 small fish, a couple of ones and twos, biggest would have been under 20cm. Do you reckon their presence will be detrimental to the cod?

Thanks for the info Voltzy.

I have a very real concern that think they will impact on the Mary River Cod. Either competing for space / food (they do like similar habitat), but also pretating on little codlings. Even one little cod eaten can have an impact on the long term viability of the species.

Cheers,

fitz..

this means they are probably breeding, which doesn't bode well for the Cod!
