Title: First trip to Hinze
Post by: bushwacker on February 04, 2011, 08:04:16 PM
Having spoken to Tony ( Bunjey ) about fishing Hinze dam and after scoping it out once or twice we decided to give it a go this morning. Unfortunalty somone ( cough cough me) couldnt get his hands on a permit for Hinze before today so an early start just wasnt going to happen waiting for Go fishing to open.

Finally down the goat track and to the ramp unloading the kayaks on a clear with pleasently cooling cloud cover we where greated by 3 nice blokes just returning from the mornings fish, After woffling on about this and that about the dam and Q's and A's about our kayaks they showed us some nice bass they had caught earlier with the biggest around 47cm and a solid fish it was  (photo is at a bad angle). The only thing that was working for these blokes who happen to be members of the stocking group for Hinze was using shrimp for bait and as expected they reported the bard grunter where out in force pestering them the whole day.

Talking to locals is a great way to attain knowledge but a sure fire way delay your launch by at least half an hr oops  :P. Come 9:30 we where on the water with a slight breaze and no movement in the water paddling was very easy and calm and all round enjoyable as we headed straight accross to some glass calm bays.

With the sun well and truely up in the sky i proceeded to throw spinnerbaits at the grass edges not knowing what to expect ( with the thought of saratoga in the back of my mind ), Come about the 7th cast on this first bay a splash and flash of a long silver body greated my SB as it hit the water but alas no hookup but getting the blood pumping!

After moving on with no further sign of life besides clouds of what i am sure where bard grunter showing on my newly fitted depth sounder we proceeded to troll around up away from the main basin. Trolling along i happen to spot the tell tail snake like shape squirming around on the top of the water near a grassy edge but couldnt raise a strike for quids  :( . Continuing on trolling a Rob Gaden warlock silver yellow and black vertical stripes much like a bard grunter showed up some goods picking up 3 bass in 15ft of water, only one going over 30 but pulled out of all proportions  ;D

Spirits where soon dampend a bit by some fairly stout winds kicking up yet Tony still managed to pick up a 34 cm bass and a small bard grunter. Deciding to call it a day at 2pm after being on the water for nearly 5 hrs strong head winds made the paddle back to the ramp not very enjoyable as the arms got a good workout just to keep in the forward motion.

Water temperature may have had something to do with the slow bite with the sounder showing and average temp of 30c. Heres a few pics but nothing fancy sorry. Plenty of sunscreen was used today aswell with a bit of a sting in the sun.

Cheers

Steve

Steve next time you visit the dam just have the $5 permit money in your pocket and the rangers will give you a fair go as long as you are not a local then its a whole different ball game.....they know you cannot access a permit early in the day.

Well done on finding a fish.

Was the track greasy under the cutting near the top?

Thanks for the tip mate, the track was pretty dry and dusty if you are reffering to the only track to the ramp, there are a few furrows and ruts that you need to aproach right tho.

Thanks mate.

Gr8 report Steve!  We were there before Xmas and the big brown snakes were out in force.  My mate and I were approached by one from a bank we were fishing in the Western arm, it was over 6ft long and saw a similar size one swimming right across the other side of the dam, put the willies into me!  :o

Yes Toni it was nice to have a decent fish for the first time in a while and am still waiting to hear from you if your still keen to hit up maroon or moogerah one day.

That bass in the 4th pic was Tonys and he had a bit of trouble getting that lure out thats for sure but the bass swam away fine  :)

My info was that rangers and council no longer sell permits since the dam was taken over by SEQ water.
This is the latest info that I could find.
"The Fishing Permit system for Hinze Dam is administered by the local fish stocking association.  Fishing permits for Hinze Dam are available for purchase from the following local outlets:

Nerang Disposals Camping & Outdoor Store 10 Spencer Road, Nerang (07) 5596 4434
Doug Burt's Tackle World 15 Nind St, Southport (07) 5531 0755
Southport Fishing & Dive Centre 95 Marine Parade, Southport (07) 5531 2333
"

Ray certainly for the last couple of years since SEQW took over, GCCC is no longer interested in the permit system which they also ran for the stocking group.

But it is the ranger who may approach you at the dam to show permits available from the retailers you mentioned, and if you do not have one, they certainly carried a book of permits in the ute for out of town anglers hence the $5 suggestion.

Might add the present crop of rangers seem a good bunch to yarn too and not overly officious in their approach.

In August last year when my yearly permit was due I approached a ranger and was referred to Go fishing. Maybe the rangers only do the daily permits.
It is very rare to see any of them at the temporary ramps.
