SunWater to continue works at Paradise Dam throughout Easter break
28 Mar 2013 - SunWater

SunWater advises that it will be continuing repairs to the downstream dissipator at Paradise Dam throughout the Easter break.

SunWater Chief Executive Officer, Peter Boettcher, said that repair works will continue throughout the Easter break and water releases will re-commence tomorrow to pass river flows around the worksite without overtopping the spillway of Paradise Dam so that works can continue.

"When we commenced works at Paradise Dam last week, we needed to stop the dam from overflowing to enable safe access for the repairs to be carried out; this was done by making water releases from the dam’s environmental flow outlet gate until the water level was 2 metres below the spillway," Mr Boettcher said.

"This allowed us to safely build an access crossing and a small levee bank to isolate the area where repairs will take place."

Mr Boettcher said that the river upstream of the dam has continued to flow and as a result, the storage has risen and is now 70cm below the spillway. To prevent the dam from spilling and maintain a safe buffer for the repair works, water releases will recommence today.

"We are taking this course of action because the safety of our staff, our customers and the local community is our utmost consideration throughout this repair construction at the dam; it is imperative that there is a safe buffer at the dam to allow works to continue."

"No flooding is expected to occur downstream of the dam; however the release may close some low level road crossings."

"The release rate from the dam is expected to be around 5,000 – 6,00ML/day. This would be equivalent to the flow when the water is around 0.15m over the spillway, however based on inflows into the dam release these may fluctuate to match inflows."

Mr Boettcher said that SunWater’s repair work will continue throughout the holiday period as planned.

"Our designers are on site to determine the next stage of repairs. Our best estimate is the works on Paradise Dam will take a number of months to complete," he said.

"We continue to remain in close contact with our customers and residents living downstream of the dam, as well as the council, police, emergency services, the local disaster management group and the dam safety regulator about our activities."
