Kookaburra Park, Karana Downs

Hello All,

Kookaburra Park in Karana Downs used to be a great fishing area before the flood. Unfortunately most of the park washed away including the fishing Platfrom, car parks, toilet etc etc. . Brisbane City Council is currently putting together plans for reconstruction. Our input will be used to guide how the plan ends up. If you have any input regarding the best facilities for fishing: is a platfrom required? How far should it be from the boat ramp? Should it be upstream from the boatramp? etc etc...let me know and I will get it to Council. You coulkd also contact the local Councillor and let her know your comments.

Do you have a direct line to Council ie do you work with or for Council?

I'd encourage all members who fish / live around or use the facilities at Kookaburra Park to post a reply to Daz's post. It might help get the money go to the best use.

The previous boat ramp was a bit of a mongrell at low tide with a big drop off,
Be nice to have the ramp a bit wider and somewhere beside the ramp to hold boats whilst parking the trailer etc.A floating pontoon would be good but may be difficult to achieve as the water runs fairly fast.
Fishing platform upstream of the ramp please.
 Be nice if the platform extended into the water at low tide.
 I haven't visited since the flood so it is a bit hard to comment without seeing the lie of the land.

Make sure those 6knot limit signs upstream of the ramp are still there to!

Also if you could make the ramp impossible to use for ski boats that would be good to

How about a designated kayak / canoe launching area upstream (around the corner), a car track & parking where you can drive "close" to the water to unload so its not a long carry to the water & its shallow enough for safe launching. BUT bollarded off to stop trailers being backed into the water ie carry from car to water.
Before the flood that water in under those trees (adjascent to the ramp) was a steep drop off (caused from ski boats washing out the bank) , very hard & dangerous to launch & get into your kayak or canoe.

Motor boats at ramp    /   non motor boats up stream around the corner. Keeps the 2 separate & safe. Both user groups are a nuisance to the other, it makes sense.

The original ramp was crappy. Bad drop off on low tide, and no room to beach/hold boat while parking the car.

I've seen the plan with the ramp basically at the bottom of the hill when you first drive down. Looks like a pretty good set-up. More lighting (or some) would be good at the ramp as well.

How about skiiers not allowed past the junction!

A separate beach area for ski boats well away from the ramp and as far downstream as possible.

I hope not, thats well in to the 6 knot zone. We all know how well ski boats follow rules.......

a ramp wide enough for either 2 or 3 lanes would be good and help ful for the busy periods over summer.. i like the idea of the yak launch spot up stream.. lighting would be good at the ramp and car park for security!! i hope this is done by xmas as i am hanging for a sharking and thready sesh.. designated rigging areas clearly marked, hope the design has thought about the easiest way to line up and back the trailer down, i like tewantin in the noosa river ramp. perfect to line up for the back down. pinkenba ramp they stuffed this up big time!! they changed flow of traffic to anti clock wise, no rigging area designated and marked clearly at all and no where to line the trailer up for the back down...
fishing platform restored ok no need for more but maybe shelters like colleges had for shade.. the shade cloth material ones.. maybe bench seats along the waters edge and maybe an updated version of the warning of bull sharks present in the water sign..
you guys really have a blank canvas to start with out there and look forward to seeing this place back up and running. its one of my fav places to fish and miss it bad.. need a monster thready fix lol

Wanna chase some in the yak up there this year as well.

they will be at kooka all ready, there is some massive populations through out the upper tidal section of the river
