PNG adventures upper Ramu River catchment and Madang Coast
« on: April 01, 2011, 04:47:41 PM »
Hey folks,

just got back from a field trip in PNG doing baseline aquatic ecological studies for a new gold mine proposal. Met some new fish species mostly exotic, that were introduced in the early nineties that are eating/competing their way through the native fish population  :-X however, being a bit mercenary about it - some are great sport fish ;) including Golden Mahseer - basically a predatory carp with a big gob on the front, a yamie 200 tail on the back which live in white water rapids and hit lures :thumbsup Some places we couldn't use any of our sampling gear as the streams were just too fast - but managed to come through with the spinning gear to get some samples for our tissues / metals baseline analysis.

Also found a full complement of lutjanid species - Jacks, black and spot tail bass in coastal streams (albeit with a gill net :P) and plenty places for future reference - just got to organise to get back there for play instead of work! ;)

Stick to fishing instead of fighting - JC

Luxury, a turbine chopper, you mining mob know how to live it up :thumbsup

Done that life jacket thing in rapids a few times before, some good flows up there I take it, what was the wet like overall?

Some rugged country there  :)

Good stuff Jim, glad to see those rough looking mongrels didn't get to go back in the water. Happiness is fly in fishing.

Steve, Himalayan Snow trout, Schizothorax richardsonii - mainly algivores- but I notice they do chase spinners, probably take a small wet fly I'd reckon - Jim

Nice.  I'd rate the Spot as the best fighting fish out there.
