Lake dyer (bill gunn dam)
« on: May 21, 2011, 05:18:23 PM »
Hey fellas,
Got a chance to have a fish next week and thought I'll see how lake dyer is fishing at the moment. I know some fellas that said they were pulling up some nice yellowbelly just after the Easter holidays and thought I might try and get some. Any tips on lures will be helpful, but I do have access to worms, shrimp and could get a couple yabbies too. Any advice on where they have been hiding lately would be great too.

Cheers,
Binga

A bad day of fishing beats a great day of working.

Heard from a few friends that they were smashing yellowbelly up there recently. They used spinnerbaits and their kids were using a float and worms.

Good Luck

Can't see why not, with a decent rod you can cast half way across Dyer.  :thumbsup

Bloke out at Fernvale the other day was telling us that SEQ Water have removed the no fishing zone from up the back, so thats the first spot I would be trying.

Remember June 26th, there is Formula One Boat racing out there, probably not a good fishing day....

Don't think it ever was a "no fishing zone" up the back of Lake Dyer. They may have once been a bird reserve on the swamp there prior to the dam being constructed, but there's nothing I've ever seen in the fisheries regs regarding a no fishing zone up the back of Dyer.
Probably more a misinterpretation by bird fanciers of one rule or guideline to keep fishing out of "their" area.... bullying tactics in other words.

AND, why birds need a reserve is beyond me, all native birds are protected in Qld anyhow.... a fortunate outcome for shags!!

There was a no powerboat area up the back when it was a Sunwater dam, now its SEQWater god only knows.......

I went out there on the weekend, last time I was there I was standing next to a couple of trees down near the water line, not fishing though. This time I could just see the top of them lol
I did get a real big hit along the rock wall, ripped the top spinning blade off my spinner? What do they stock in there, I know of yellas?

What feeds this dam? Is it another one of those off stream storage thingies i.e. water is pumped out of Laidley Creek into it ?

Cheers,
Dave.

Hi, got this tip from a guy in the shop about yellas. he says if bait fishing use a float, and hang a bait according to the water depth your in, one or two metres he reckons. Use a big round one and slap it on the water every so often? Apparently this will attract the yellas to your bait. Swears by it!
I have also heard the yellas should be on in paradise and lenthals. Apparently (i'm no expert just passing on info) in this area the first cold snap sets them off.
