My first Kayak Christened
« on: November 14, 2010, 09:18:23 AM »
G'day all

Thanks for the advice, The decision has been made.

I decided the OK Prowler Ultra 4.7 Camo would be the kayak for me. (Second last camo one available apparently, Not including what is already in stock at shops). Ordered it from Tim at the Farnborough Store, Picked it up Thursday night.  Also picked up a few bits n' pieces to get me going. Tim has also ordered me the Ice Box and an Anchor Trolley.

I took it for a bit of a run this morning. What can I say... Superb, Loving it, Can't fault it. I'm now officially hooked on this Kayak Fishing.

I christened it on Alligator Creek, near The Caves, CQ. Beautiful part of the world. About ten strokes into it a small (Tarpon??) hit my little popper and made quite a mess of itself. After that it was Cattie, Cattie, Cattie on a shallow diver. No quality but still alot of fun.

I can't wait to give it a run up Corio Bay/Waterpark area.

Heres the snaps.

Cheers
Jono

Way to go Jono, no point startin' at the bottom and doing the continual upgrades.  I think it works out cheaper in the long run to start with the top of the line.  Nice yak.  Gotta love the little Tarpon too.

Geez that waterway looks stunning, and it has tarpon! The second thing you're about to learn about kayak fishing is to cover your feet up ;)
Cheers John.

I'm not one to half do things, Doing it once properly is the way to go I reckon.

I have thought about the required clothing and plan to cover up . This was just a quick 2 hr test run at 5.30am so I thought it couldn't be to sunny.

My next plan is to install a cheap humminbird sounder, The same way you did Sel. I only really want if for depth and temp, Nothing flash.

Question - Is the Humminbird 570x what I'm looking for?
               - Is $370 an OK price for it?

I can pick up the transducer holder/threaded plastic rod part to suit Prowler from BCF as well as the wiring loom with inline fuse holder. Is this they way to go about it?

Going to try and get all this done this week. Hopefully going to give it a run upto Corio bay on the weekend. Planning on taking the swag and camping up there Saturday night. We'll see how that goes.

Any more advice will be appreciated.

Cheers
Jono

Jono

Here is the link to my humminbird installs on the OK yaks I have paddled, http://www.bassnyak.com/diy-projects.html

I think you will find that BCF has all the accessories on  clearance at the moment, well they do in the Brisbane Stores. I have picked up several transducer boot kits and power cable kits for $19.95 each. Get them while you can as they are much dearer than that normal retail. Make sure you get the new transducer boot kit, it is marked on the packaging as new.

Price...well its a little bit off retail of 399 so I suppose that is ok. Not a bad sounder for that yak too.

Cheers
