NSW Carp Control Plan
« on: January 23, 2011, 03:29:40 PM »
NSW Carp Control Plan released

Industry & Investment NSW has finalised the control plan for Cyprinus carpio, commonly known as carp.
The draft carp control plan was released for public comment from November 2009 through January 2010.
Carp are widespread in NSW, particularly in the Murray-Darling Basin and the river systems of the Mid NSW Coast and Tablelands,” said Industry & Investment NSW Manager of Aquatic Biosecurity, Jane Frances.
“In many areas carp is the dominant fish species, and can have detrimental effects on the habitats and food sources of our many native fish.
“The plan provides a framework for carp management in NSW by outlining existing control activities and identifying priority areas for further control work to minimise further spread of this aquatic pest.
“Comments received on the draft have been taken into consideration and incorporated where possible in the development of the final control plan. I would like to thank all those who provided input and sent in submissions on the draft plan.”
The control plan recognises the scale of the carp problem in NSW and the limitations to effective control.
“Although a comprehensive eradication program is not feasible, the plan recognises that carp control can be effective when a coordinated and targeted approach is taken in order to maximise environmental and community benefits,” she said.
“The plan encourages further scientific investigation into the biology and impact of carp and the development of more effective and efficient control techniques.
“It also promotes an integrated approach to river rehabilitation to improve fish habitats and support native fish populations.”
