A Bird, a Fish, a Pane of Glass and a Fish ID Wanted.
« on: January 28, 2011, 06:24:55 PM »
G'day all,

I received this email today from my uncle and being a keen angler himself he'd appreciate a positive identification on this fish.

His email is as follows:

My catch for today.
This fish was stuck to the glass of a sliding glass door at home, this
morning.
We are always having birds fly into the glass and you can see the mark where
the bird has hit. The fish was purged and slid down the glass about 300mm.
Now all I have to do is identify the fish to see if it has come from the dam
(freshwater) or the river (saltwater).

My thoughts were a juvenile Herring or Bony Bream.

Cheers Dave

Mouth Almighty (Glossamia aprion). Have caught them on spinner baits Dick, so they do get big.

I'll also stab the knife in glass perchlet, 'glassy'. (salt and fresh water versions)

Its an Ambasssid, most likely Ambassis marianus, but possibly Ambassis agassizii.

It pays to not drink so much before doing an ID :-[  Have to agree that it is a glass fish after a second look with clearer eyes. Don't think I could catch one of these on a spinnerbait. Have caught a giant perchlet on fly before though.
