To answer Childerfish question in an academic way so as to not be implicated in conspiring to target the fish ::), the best time to catch a cod is when you'll do them and their population the least damage i.e. not when they're rowing up (winter) leading into the breeding season (thought to be mid to late spring) or in the breeding season itself when males could be sitting on nest sites with eggs and young.  The bass closed season pretty well overlaps with the rowing up timing but catching cod early in the bass season opening could be risky for cod populations - if you want to do the river fish a favour - don't target bass where you know there is a good chance of coming across cod until summer. That leaves the hot months - summer and early autum - which tends to be when cod are most active and bycatch can become an issue,..try not to lift them out of the water or if you must for a photo or for hook release cradle their mid rift and use a firm thumb lock on the bottom jaw- careful the teeth can shred a thumb - gloves are handy - I rather use my hand cause you can feel how much pressure you need to put on to hold them instead of a mechanical device grip :thumbsup

Some people are either ignorant of the fisheries laws, or just blatantly flaunt them! Saw this on youtube the other day, and it is a tributary of the Mary river!
