Calliope River
« on: October 15, 2010, 12:04:24 PM »
Anyone got any info on Calliope River at the Bruce HWY at present? I guess a fair bit of fresh would be flowing???

Was wondering if it would be worth flicking a few lures on Sunday on our way past (Boys road trip to Metallica Concert in Brisbane).

I have never fished it. Any tips appreciated.

Regards
Jono

Jono,

Not sure on the Calliope however is there ever a bad time to flick a lure!!!  I was tempted to practice my surface lures in the front yard the other morning  ;D  Was enough water I could have launched a yak!!!  I guess there could be a little fresh coming through depending on the rain up that way but better to have tried and failed I say.  Good Luck and enjoy the concert.

G'day Colin

Thanks mate, I'm thinking the same. The concert should be a hoot.

Cheers

Thanks Fitzy

I had a look at that on ausfish earlier today. Looks like a great spot to spend a few hours.

After talking to the our driver today he is pretty keen to go straight past so he can start on the festivities as well. I dont blame him either with a car full of drunken mates I think the sooner he gets us out of his car the better.

Next time, Its only a short run for me down to Calliope. Might stay a night or two and give it a good lashing.

Would it be good kayaking there mate?

Cheers

G'Day Jono,

In the top side of the old crossing there's alot of good water for kayaking / fishing. This is only a few hundred meters up from where that video was taken. Might be a bit rough on a kayak getting it down through that cutting in the video, but on high tide I guess you could do it.

There's alot of water in the upper catchment. I've been wanting to drop the kayak in up near where Catfish Creek joins the Calliope River & paddle fish my way down. Its easy to find / access it as it's right next to the highway to Biloela.

I've gone into a couple of spots there & seen some good size bream & tarpon. There's got to be the odd barra or jack that get up there & I'm hopeful that the odd Jungle Perch might be there. Never know until you give it a go.
*Just remember this is officially still croc country. One property owner up there told me he saw one a few years back in the hole behind his house which is upstream of Calliope township.

Cheers,

fitz..

*Banana prawns hang  in the deeper pools from winter to mid spring ( above the crossing).
Plenty of jacks exist, but they aint silly up that way. Barra, yea, above. Bigger fish down below the crossing. Below where Fitz's movie was shot there can be XOS barra in that immediate pool. They hunt the large bully mullet, on the making tides; flood and ebb. The first of the ebb tide through the rapids can produce interesting fishing. Fish over 120cm came from there this year. Bigger ones exist.
A friend of mine yaks his way up river from the crossing in the dawn, dusk period. Jacks, mainly.
Crocs have been seen, as Fitzy says, but they'd be in most coastal waters in our CQ district.

I Just loaded some pictures of the Calliope River into the gallery. A few pics are of the upper reaches above the tidal influence around the highway.
