First cod!
« on: October 13, 2013, 04:37:16 PM »
For some time now I've been wanting to target a freshwater cod. None of the guys I fish with target them nor caught one so it's been hard to convince any of them to give it a crack with me. I'd be sussing out some areas where I could walk the bank or take the kayak but this trip was organised with intent of using Wades boat. Our plan went to cr@p as soon as we arrived at our destination and ended up going through about 4, on the water an hour later then what we wanted but we made it there and everything had been forgotten.
In about 10 minutes Wade snagged up in good looking structure so I done the nice thing and cast into it, 3 winds and feeling the spinnerbait nock a couple of branches I hooked up  ;D Out comes a beautiful 575mm Murry Cod! The rest of the day was pretty quiet with both of us catching a small yella and I missed  another cod next to a big fallen tree. Looks and sounds like that part of the river gets smashed a lot with countless set lines :( We both don't think We'll go back there, defiantly have the cod bug now. Can't wait till next fornight for another session in a new area.

Cheers, Mick.

The MD closed season does not apply to rivers like the Condamine, Balonne and McIntyre Brook etc in QLD. Even though it's cod breeding season there's no legal reason to stop you from targeting them at this time of year.

Landing your first cod is memorable milestone.

Cheers,
Dave.

There's murray cod in all Qld rivers that flow into the Murray / Darling catchment. 23% of the catchment is in Qld, there's a lot of rivers & creeks north of the border with cod in them.

It wasn't caught in any of the Barwon, Macintyre or Dumaresq rivers.

Well done Mick, a good start to your cod account. The spawn in Qld is over and done by now so don't sweat it. If you dig around, there's a stack of good water further out that way. Got some reliable reports of some serious cod caught a ways downstream on that river in the past week.

For me it more about getting out on the country than catching fish, but they're always good to catch.

Cheers,

fitz..

Congratulations Mick, nice fish.  Good call on studying up on the regulations before targeting a new species.

Mick,
Keep fishing and putting in reports, we need as many keen river fisho's as possible, and keep an eye out for the set lines too! Cheers,
JD

And keep those habitat vandals honest by posting reports and pictures of cleared vegetation, and damage to banks from livestock....  :thumb

Bethune told me once that he reckons the best enforcement is to have more people on the water. Peer pressure does a lot to keep others honest and in this technology age, everyone has a camera and a phone to dob in the idiots.
