I seem to recall that there was a bit of discussion some time back about ultra light baitcast rods. I've just had a look at the new Samaki Zing rods and they look pretty good. Mt local tackle shop has them at $149.00 and they are 5'6" and rated at 2-6lb or 1-3kg. I know you can get this sort of thing in a Loomis or such but this is a more affordable rod with excellent casting ability. I have 3 Samaki rods now and love 'em. I think I'll add one of these to the collection. Just when I thought I had enough gear something nice shows up...oh well.

Are the lighter baitcast rods to get a bit more momentum behiend smaller lures you wouldnt normally use with a baitcaster ? This interests me, Please share more when you get one.

I thought you'd be one of the first to show an interest in this Bushy. Yeh that's pretty much it, provided the reel will do the work as well. I've been using a Wilson Live Fibre Lightning 1-3kg stick for a while now and paired it with a Daiwa Alphas. It will toss 7gm lures really well, yet still has enough in the butt to handle the bigger Bass. I just got a Quantum Smoke 100 and it's going to wear the Samaki. At 5.6 and ultra light they are ideal in small boats or kayaks.

Yeah it grates you cant easily get light baitcaster rods. (about as easy as finding rocking horse do do!)
I'd love to get my hands on a 1-2kg version.

One thing I liked about the Samaki was that it had a decent grip and the trigger was of a generous size. When you've got big paws like me you need a decent grip no matter how light the rod is. Binder, I knew you'd be interested too mate, this is a nice little stick but you'll have to settle for 1-3kg

I picked up my Samaki 1-3kg rod yesterday and put a Quantum Smoke 100 on it. I Immediatly like the feel and balance of the setup, it's light yet the grip on the rod is reasonably generous. It casts a 9gm lure about 15metres without any huge effort and looks handy in a small boat or kayak where a long rod is a nuisance. Taking it Bass fishing tomorrow arvo, so we'll see how it gets on with that job.

Be interesting to hear how you go with the small lures when you get a bit tired. I can toss any 30mm lure, albeit only short distances, when I'm fresh on my 2-5kg rods, when I get tired and my reflexes get slow is when the tears (and endless knots) come with those small lures for me.

Have to get some Red Bull inter you Andrew. You only get tired when the fishing is slow. When I got into that hot bite I posted about the other day it wasn't tiredness that was my problem, it was more like shaking hands and trying to get another cast into fray as quick as possible. Then there were a few tangles. BTW I know of a nice little 1-3kg 5'6" Wilson that's going for about $80 brand new.
