Illegal fishing blitz in State’s west

Five men are facing up to 50 fisheries offences after they were allegedly found in possession of a large quantity of fishing gear by fisheries officers in the State’s west.

NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) Director of Fisheries Compliance, Glenn Tritton said fisheries officers apprehended the men camping on the Macquarie River, near Warren.

“A patrol by NSW DPI fisheries officers of a reserve on the Macquarie River uncovered five men allegedly using and in possession of a range illegal fishing gear,” Mr Tritton said.

“Fisheries officers seized 90 rigged handlines, 54 illegal traps, 11 drift lines, six yabby nets and two illegal cast nets.

“In addition the men were allegedly found to be using live carp as bait and two of the men had failed to pay for a NSW Recreational Fishing Licence.

“The four men aged 18, 19, 27 and 28 from Gunnedah and one man aged 28 from Warren were interviewed by fisheries officers.

“The men will now face Warren Local Court on up to 50 offences including use and possession of illegal fishing gear, failure to pay the NSW Recreational Fishing Fee and using live fin fish illegally as bait.”

Mr Tritton said these offences were detected on the same day that Warren Local Court sentenced a 43 old ex-Dubbo man to a four months suspended jail sentence and fined him $5,000 plus $324 in professional costs for a number of illegal fishing offences.

“Fisheries officers witnessed the man and two others take nine protected eel tailed catfish and ten golden perch from two illegal gill nets in Ewenmar Creek, near Warren in September 2009,” Mr Tritton said.

“A fourth man then became involved in the incident obstructing fisheries officers attempting to seize a boat.

“When approached the men became aggressive and abusive, with two of the men making threats towards the fisheries officers.

“NSW police officers were called and fisheries officers then seized the fish and nets.

“The man, who was the last of the four men to face court, pleaded guilty to a number of charges including unlawfully using a net for taking fish, taking fish in contravention of a fishing closure, possessing fish illegally taken and abusing a fisheries officer.

“This brings the total fines issued to the four men in relation to this matter to over $17,000.

“One man also received 450 hours of community service and the boat was forfeited to the State.”

Mr Tritton warned that fisheries officers will continue to work to stamp out illegal fishing in the State’s west.

“Fishing is a popular pastime across the region and while most people checked by fisheries officers are found to be doing the right thing, there are still some that continue to ignore the rules in place to protect our fishing resources,” Mr Tritton said.

“Fisheries compliance in the Macquarie district is continuing to improve with figures to date showing an 84% compliance rate for the district, a 4% improvement from last financial year.

“This sends a clear message to illegal fishers who continue show blatant disregard for our fisheries rules - it is only a matter of time until you are caught.”
