‘Endangered Ecological Community’ status for the Snowy River

The aquatic ecological community in the catchment of the Snowy River in NSW has been listed as an Endangered Ecological Community by the Fisheries Scientific Committee. This means all native fish in the rivers, creeks, streams and lakes of the Snowy River catchment within NSW are protected, with the exception of Lakes Eucumbene, Jindabyne, Island Bend and Guthega. Trout fishing is not affected as the listing only protects native fish.
Recreational fishers can continue to fish in the area as normal while an assessment of the impact of recreational fishing in the catchment is underway. The community will have a chance to comment on the recommendations arising from the assessment.
