New Murray crayfish season opens June 1
31 May 2013 - NSW DPI

Fishers looking to catch a Murray crayfish this winter are reminded to make sure they know the new rules including where they can fish, before the fishing season opens on 1 June.
Department of Primary Industries (DPI), Senior Fisheries Manager Inland, Cameron Westaway, said significant changes have been introduced to the fishing season for Murray crayfish to protect this important species.

“New changes were introduced earlier this year after the NSW Fisheries Scientific Committee proposed to list Murray crayfish as a vulnerable species in NSW,” Mr Westaway said.

“There have been widespread declines in the populations of Murray crayfish, particularly in the lower reaches of the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers most likely due to a number of environmental factors including habitat degradation and modification and blackwater events after flooding.

“It is important that we proactively assist the recovery of the iconic species and the new changes will assist in this process.”

The new regulatory arrangements include:
· Prohibiting the take of Murray crayfish in all NSW waters except in the Murrumbidgee River and its tributaries excluding Old Mans Creek between the Hume Highway road bridge at Gundagai and 100 metres upstream of the weir face at Berembed Weir, near Ganmain, and in the Murray River and its tributaries from 130 metres downstream of the weir face at Hume Weir, near Albury and the Newell Highway road bridge at Tocumwal.
· Introducing a three month open season from 1 June to protect pre-spawning females.
· Increasing the minimum size limit (measured from the rear of the eye socket to the centre rear of the carapace) for Murray crayfish from 9 centimetres to 10 centimetres and introducing a maximum size limit of 12 centimetres to ensure all females reach sexual maturity and that very large crayfish can continue within the population.
· Reducing the daily bag limit for Murray crayfish from 5 to 2 and the possession limit from 10 to 4.

All other existing rules will continue including a prohibition on taking berried females or removing heads, tails or claws in, on, or adjacent to waters DPI, Director of Fisheries Compliance, Glenn Tritton, said fisheries officers will be patrolling our waterways to ensure the new regulatory arrangements are being followed.

“It is important that all fishers looking to catch a Murray crayfish during the open season know the new rules before heading out fishing this Murray crayfish season,” Mr Tritton said.

“Fishers can obtain a free Murray cray measuring device and regulatory information before heading out from DPI fisheries offices and most bait and tackle stores.

“Fisheries officers will be increasing their patrols of Murray crayfish waters to enforce the new rules.”

Up to five hoop nets per person may be used to take Murray crayfish where permitted with the letters “HN” and user’s name and address on the float.

Where it is legal to use hoop nets, they may continue to be used to take yabbies in waters closed to the taking of Murray crayfish. However, if any Murray crayfish are accidentally caught they must be immediately returned to the water unharmed.
