Talking about Transducers
« on: May 28, 2011, 04:05:58 PM »
I am getting close to installing one in my old Yak. Fiberglass and painted in epoxy.

Fellas can I expect to have any trouble reading through that ?   A bracket over the side sounds risky so I would rather go inside.

Also, I am only famillar with the one in my tinnie, a Humminbird Matrix 17.  I expect I would be looking at a different machine for a Kayak, hey ?
Any advice to set me on the right track would be appreciated.

Gordon

Go in no problems,  same as a plastic yak.
Some Kmarts and either bias or whitworths (can remember which) are selling out the eagle cuda 300 for $100. Great entry level unit for a yak.

If your lucky you might find one floating still about. Dont bother with Kmart Morayfield, the last one from there is sitting in my shed as a spare  ;D

Sounds good but I could go up a little on entry level and gain more features.  Splash proof etc.  What do you think ?

G'Day Gordon,

Good advice there from Binder....  :thumbsup

There's a few other topics here regarding internally mounting transducers into kayaks...

IMHO any fish finder that isn't splash proof as standard should be avoided. Recipe for disaster, especially on a kayak.

Cheers,

fitz..

I've never seen a sounder in Australia that was not IPX7 which means can be in 1m of water for 30 minutes and still function. (doesn't mean there are not any, but look for IPX7 rating).

I use a Lowrance mark5X unit on my yak. I quite like it , around $250 - $300 they go for. (grey scale still).

You can spend the earth if you want, but to be honest my sounder doesn't get used for much more than telling me depth, I like to cast lures at structure. Not into sitting on top of schools of fish. All I really want is that I can read it (no reflections etc).

If you want to find active fish under schools of bait etc etc, buying a top end is well worth the money.

Thanks fellas you have set me on the right track.  I just like to fish the narrows and read the bottom in 5 to 12 M of water usually.

Gordon.
