Kayak anchors

For a while now I've been using dumb bells for an anchor in the kayak / canoe.

They're pretty cheep from places like K Mart or Target sporting section. There is plenty of brands that are rubber or plastic coated which makes for a quiter anchor & doesn't scratch the boat as much when in the up position.
I've lost 2 now in snags that just wouldn't let go, cut the cheep string (cheep Venetian blind chord) and get another.

In a mild flow I've found 750 gram is fine. Have also used 1kg & 1.5kg. I guess it depends on the flow you want to anchor in.

What are other people using?

I've got a 2kg plate (weight) I used for a while, did the job. Had the rope (string) wrapped around a power lead holder. I've got what must be the smallest ever seen fold out canoe anchor now. Just wrap the rope around the anchor itself. The power lead holder did a better job, as I have to let all the rope out to deploy the fold out anchor (Or it cant be folded out!) Both have never dragged in tidal flow or wind that I have been out in.

But I use the anchor so rarely, I hardly ever even put it in the yak these days.

I have a 2.5kg plastic coated dumbell. First time I used it there was water at my feet from the scupper holes now that I had that extra weight on the front of the yak. Next time I am somewhere that has them I will get a lighter one.

Seen yours Steve i reckon itd have to have come from the same place as Daves.... looks good but lead is excy ,, ive got a 1kg rubber coated dunbell im going to make my own anchor lock soon when i get a chance to get to whitworths i cant afford a scotty anchor lock.

I made a good one when I was on the yak once, found a river rock, tied some string I had to it, dropped it down and it worked!

I have the a Golden Dumbell, works well and its shiny and cheap...

Nah, he needs to hit the Bremer now has he the right yak.

Sorry folks Turkey Shoot not my thing, I like a challenge. I'm going back to the dam, that's where it all started for me and its a pity we don't talk about the great bass of Wivenhoe anymore, just the Dam escapees below it in the river that look to be so easy to catch....pretty boring after a while, sorry but that's the way I feel...See me on my Tarpon 120 at Big W soon..

I'm going back to the dam, that's where it all started for me and its a pity we don't talk about the great bass of Wivenhoe anymore, just the Dam escapees below it in the river that look to be so easy to catch....pretty boring after a while, sorry but that's the way I feel...See me on my Tarpon 120 at Big W soon..

Good onya Sel.    I know the feeling, I got a bit ho-hum with fat lake bass for a while.
Time permitting (bloody work load is getting worse...  ) I'll be out on big Dubya a bit this winter myself, I recon as soon as the river season closes....

Thanks for the heads up all, I was just thinking about what I could use as an anchor, I think the target/k'mart dumbell will be the goer!
