Tender awarded to remove Keepit cofferdam

22 April 2013 - NSW State Water Corp

The tender for the removal of one of two cofferdams at Keepit Dam has been awarded by State Water Corporation.

Hamcon Civil Pty Ltd were awarded the contract for removal of the right abutment cofferdam which was constructed as part of the $40 million works package one of the Keepit Dam safety upgrade.

Cofferdams are temporary dams designed to keep water away from the construction area to enable works to continue regardless of the water level of the dam.

Keepit upgrade site co-ordinator Russell Sainsbury said the works would involve excavating the cofferdam and relocating the material to the stockpile area on State Water land which was also used during the upgrade.

“When the upgrade was completed the water level in the dam was too high to remove the cofferdam.

“Now that the storage is sitting at 43% of capacity the machinery can access the area.”

Tenders for removal of the second cofferdam have also been called and will close on Tuesday, 30 April 2013.

Works package one of the Keepit Dam safety upgrade was completed on time and on budget in November 2011 and involved the construction of two spillways and three saddle dams.

The upgrade is one of seven State Water is managing to enable the dams to safely pass extreme floods and meet NSW Dams Safety Committee standards which have been revised since the dams were built.
