Anglers provide great support for Murrumbidgee River Survey
25 Jun 2013 - NSW DPI

The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and Charles Sturt University (CSU) have just completed a 12 month survey of angler catch and harvest along the Murrumbidgee River, in an effort to better understand our local fisheries resources.
Jamin Forbes, DPI Narrandera Fisheries Centre researcher and PhD student, led the first real survey of angler behaviour on the River, between Berembed Weir and Yanco Weir from May 2012 April 2013.

"The angler survey, supported by funds from the NSW Recreational Fishing Licence, was designed to estimate the number of fish caught, the number removed for consumption, and the amount of fishing effort so that the DPI can better understand the fishery,” Mr Forbes said.

“The survey was conducted by a pool of 25 staff from the Narrandera Fisheries Centre who spent eight days a month either waiting at boat ramps, or navigating the river by boat seeking fishers.

"Fishing is a passion for rural and regional communities and we found committed anglers on the river in the best and worst conditions our climate can offer,” Mr Forbes said,

"The high quality of information gathered from this survey is testament to the commitment anglers have toward the Murrumbidgee and its fish."

The survey found that:
• 655 groups, 1,453 anglers and a total of 75,000 fishing hours were involved in the survey with the majority of anglers from the local region, but included fishermen from Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, the Northern Territory as well as some international tourists.
• Murray cod (42% of anglers) and golden perch (34% of anglers) were the most popular angling targets, with 7% of anglers targeting Murray crayfish, 3% fishing for carp, whilst 12% of anglers had no target species.
• 98% of anglers used bait rather than lures to catch fish.
• In terms of the total catch Murray cod comprised 59%, followed by carp (14%), Murray crayfish (14%), trout cod (10%) and golden perch (3%).
• Of the total fish harvested by anglers, carp represented 12%, Murray cod (3%), Murray crayfish (3%) and golden perch (2%).

It is important that our management arrangements such as bag and size limits are based on the best available science.

“The overall support we received from anglers was fantastic, we were greeted warmly on the water and anglers were happy to spend a few minutes recollecting details of their fishing that day.

“By talking directly to anglers we are able to better understand both their needs and what is required to protect the fishery.” Mr Forbes said.

We like to thank all fishers and non-fishers that we approached over the past twelve months for their time and efforts."

“Improving our knowledge of the fishery structure will help us to ensure a healthy recreational fishery into the future.”
