Carp Program on high alert.

Carp Program on high alert.

High rainfall over winter saw both lakes Sorell and Crescent go above Full Supply Level (FSL). In early October Lake Sorell went to 160mm above (FSL) and Lake Crescent 210mm. This put our carp management program into the high risk level because there was a chance the lakes would spill and open up sites to carp spawning
Carp look for shallow (below knee depth) water over muddy bottom with fine grass to spawn in and at the moment all the wetlands around Lake Sorell are completely filled with water. So are many backwaters around the edges of the lake.
We’re focusing on ensuring all of these areas are secured and spawning is prevented.
We’ve blocked high risk paces with barrier nets, or gill nets, or both. We’re always watching the edges of the lake for changes in the water levels to make sure no new spawning sites become available.
The lakes have just dropped below full supply level, but we’ll be working as hard as ever to catch the carp that are left in Lake Sorell and stop any spawning
