Native fish set to access more Namoi River
19 November 2012 - NSW State Water Corp

Native fish are set to access an additional 220km of the Namoi River after State Water Corporation called tenders to construct a fish lock on Mollee Weir near Narrabri in northern NSW.

Fish locks are structures which allow native fish to move upstream and downstream of a weir to access more river.

State Water project manager Marcos Guirguis said the project is an environmental offset strategy of the Keepit Dam safety upgrade.

“With each dam safety upgrade State Water is required to address environmental impacts on the river,” Mr Guirguis said.

“We have worked with NSW Department of Primary Industries Fisheries to devise offset projects such as the Mollee Weir fish lock to benefit the environment.”

The contract is scheduled to be awarded early in 2013 with construction expected to take 12 months to complete.

Works package one of the Keepit Dam safety upgrade was completed on time and on budget in 2011 and enabled the dam to better withstand extreme floods as required by the NSW Dams Safety Committee.

Other environmental offset works for the Keepit upgrade included the creation of biodiversity areas, installation of fauna boxes in trees and other possible fishway projects.
