River patrols for long weekend
26 March, 2013 - DSE Victoria

Mildura residents and visitors are likely to see the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) fireboat Warluyuki later this week as DSE, Victoria Police officers and Parks Victoria rangers conduct patrols to ensure people enjoying the river are doing the right thing and staying safe.

DSE Forest Officer, Geoff Tyers, said campfires and litter will be the focus of the boat patrols upstream of the Mildura Bridge.

“We’ll use the fireboat to access camping areas along the Murray and talk to people enjoying the long weekend about the regulations that apply to campfires and litter,” Mr Tyers said.

“We want to educate campers but where necessary we will issue infringement notices to those people blatantly doing the wrong thing.

“We ask that people make sure they understand the regulations around campfires, check that it is not a day of total fire ban and ask themselves if they really need a campfire at all.

“Escaped campfires are a very real concern along the river and could easily become a major bushfire, particularly given the dryness of grass and leaves in the bush.

“Each time a fire destroys vegetation it reduces the available habitat for native animals and also reduces the availability of camping and picnicking spots for visitors,” Mr Tyers said.

Parks Victoria and Victoria Police will also be out running joint patrols in parks and reserves along the river.

“In addition to campfires, litter and illegal off-road driving are ongoing problems, particularly during the peak season,” Parks Victoria Mildura Team Leader Rob Mcglashan said.

“We will be conducting patrols to inspect campsites throughout the parks and ask that visitors leave the bush in a clean condition to help protect the environment so everyone can enjoy it.”

Campfires are not permitted in some areas of public land or may only be allowed in purpose-built fireplaces. People should check what restrictions are in place when planning their camping or fishing trip and use properly constructed fireplaces where provided or use a fuel stove.

If there are no restrictions on campfires, and in the absence of a fireplace, campfires must be lit in a pit 30 centimetres deep, be no larger than a metre in size and be clear of flammable vegetation for three metres around and above a fire. Under no circumstances should a campfire be left unattended and always make sure your campfire is cool to touch before leaving.

On the spot fines of up to $423 can be issued for breaches of fire regulations. The maximum penalty for breaches of the Forests (Fire Protection) Regulations 2004 is $10,000 or two years imprisonment.
