Title: Punchin'
Post by: takrat on July 07, 2013, 04:57:17 PM
The Bass fishers in the US use a technique to get through matted weed called "punching". I'm some of you have heard of it. It involves using heavy braid and a tungsten jighead with a long worm plastic and they loft it over these mats and the heavy jig head "punches" through into clear water underneath. They talk of using 60-80lb braid and heavy rods to rip the jighead back out hopefully with a bass attached. The heavy braid is apparently to saw through the weed/lilly stems cutting a track to get the fish out. For those of us who like to "finesse" fish. This would be worlds apart, however as some of our impoundments get increasingly covered in lillies it may be worth trying some time. I doubt that I'd be investing in specialised gear though.

Probably 15 - 18 years or so back I saw Harro switch gear and do the similar to fish some heavy lily covered water up north for barramundi. Managed to get an 8 inch plastic in under the weeds; and it worked very quickly as a solid meter + barra came to the boat in short order, though we did have to plough the boat into the weed to net the barra.

I guess we just have to keep our minds open to different techniques. I suppose if you saw the lillies moving you'd have to reckon on there being some thing under there, and have a go. I've seen blokes hopping a weedless plastic over the pads and getting a pretty spectacular take.
