Snag a space at a fishing workshop this school holidays
26 Sep 2014 - NSW DPI

Children keen on the great outdoors and looking for some excitement this school holidays can learn the basics of recreational fishing at Gaden Trout Hatchery in Jindabyne on October 3 and 4.

Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Education Officer, Stephen Thurstan, said the fishing workshops would give children aged between 8 and 14 the chance to learn how to fish and encourage them to continue in the sport.

"Gaden Trout Hatchery, on the banks of the beautiful Thredbo River just 10 minutes from Jindabyne, is the perfect place for children to learn more about fishing," Mr Thurstan said.

"During the workshops children will learn the recreational fishing rules and regulations, how to fish safely and responsibly and about aquatic habitats.

"Each child will get the chance to throw a line in a special pond full of hungry rainbow trout weighing more than a kilogram and will have a tour of the hatchery, which is full of baby trout.

"The workshops are one of the many initiatives implemented by the NSW Government using funds from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts to improve fishing opportunities across the State."

The workshops will be held on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 October at the Gaden Trout Hatchery, Kosciusko Road, Jindabyne from 10am to 3pm.

Each workshop costs $40 a child, which includes a quality rod and reel, hooksafe, tackle box, shirt, hat and a BBQ lunch.

Parents are encouraged to ensure children participating have plenty of sunscreen, bring along a drink bottle for water and wear enclosed footwear.

Numbers are limited to a maximum of 25 children a day and bookings are essential.

To secure a place please call Stephen Thurstan on 0438 245 190.  More information on the fishing workshops are available.
