Community partnership secures funding for lake revegetation project
Wednesday 21 January, 2015 - G M Water

Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) will work with local community groups to plant more than 34,000 trees and shrubs around Lake Mulwala and Lake Hume thanks to a $73,260 grant from the Federal Government’s  20 Million Trees Programme.

GMW Recreation & Land Management Officer Jay Whittaker said the revegetation works would complement priorities listed in Land & On-Water Management  Plans for Lake Hume and Lake Mulwala.

“GMW worked on developing these plans with support from the Murray Darling Basin Authority, local government, traditional owners and community representatives from groups including Landcare, Bundalong Action Group, Friends of Chinaman’s Island and  Mulwala Progress Association,” Mr Whittaker said.

“A passionate Community Reference Group is now driving implementation of many of the actions in those plans, which include enhancing ecological values and protecting sites of cultural significance at both lakes.”

Sections of vegetation around the lakes are stressed and in poor condition and require various levels of revegetation.

“Through this project we will revegetate the area with species unique to the area such as red gums , sedges and rushes that provide valuable habitat to endangered birds, fish and animals such as Macquarie Perch, Regent Honey-eaters Spot-tailed Quolls,” he said.
Planting is due to start in March.

Federal Member for Farrer Sussan Ley welcomed the funding, congratulating all involved in applying for the grant.

“Lakes Mulwala and Hume are not only significant water storages, they are popular tourist destinations and have many unique cultural and environmental values,” Ms Ley said.

“It is great to see community groups, government agencies and traditional owners working together to improve this wonderful local environment.”

The Lake Enhancement Project was funded through the first round of the 20 Million Trees Programme, which  is providing $50 million over four years to contribute to re-establishing native vegetation, providing habitat to support threatened plants and animals, and creating greener spaces to improve the liveability of cities and towns.
