Waking up winter barra
« on: August 25, 2014, 11:27:36 PM »
Doing some work up in the Gulf got the chance to visit a station I used to live on 32 years ago....  tried an afternoon bank walking flicking hardbodies and SPs - finally got a couple of fish interested by bumping a deep diver into the timber- but they were still suffering the winter chills - one about 60 hit the lure didn't fully hook up half jumped and spat it, another bout 85 kept short boofing it but not connecting and wouldn't leave the snag - so I'd drag the lure past his nose and each time he'd half boof it - eventually I got my lure snagged and even though I could see it and probably reach it - broke it off, given recent events in the NT and the fact I remember a dog getting eaten in front of its owner at this very spot back in the early nineties.... so after the lure break-off the fish shut down - so kept walking downstream - as the arvo got later (still no other strikes anywhere) I thought it was time to try a popper - first cast and a little barra hardly twice as a long as the lure hooked up - I thought if this little bugger is prepared to go a popper the bigger fellas will be too (poppers in winter are not usually the go) - so went back to my snag where I knew I could fish with the confidence of knowing there were two fish there... sixth cast of gurgle plop.. and BOOF - missed one more cast BOOF connected, good fight in the timber on spin stick and then I had the smaller ~60 cm fish, well knowing there was another fish there,.. five more casts BOOF - connected Bigger fish - not much of a fight though cause the popper wedged sideways in his gob - still being a bit mercenary and wanting a feed of barra they both came with me- nice welcome back to an old snagI hadn't fished for 32 years - long time between drinks - but it still quenched my thirst !! :thumbsup

Yeah they're my favourite Gary, little ones for bass, big ones for barra - not as bloopy as some others more subtle disturbance, but will still bloop when you twitch them fast
