Seek and destroy carp
Winter is here and despite cool conditions that are not helpful to carp fishing, the IFS team is looking for opportunities to get the remaining 3% of carp out of Lake Sorell. Low water temperatures can encourage carp to gather in deep water and these groups can be found by using carp fitted with radio-transmitters and then targeted with gill nets and electrofishing.
Last week IFS staff were greeted with still, clear weather, and set out in icy conditions, with radio-receivers, to find carp in Lake Sorell. The team searched the whole lake and found the transmitter carp were still widely spread across the lake. This showed that even though conditions were right, the carp weren’t gathering.
IFS will monitor Lake Sorell regularly over this winter, taking every chance to catch carp. Every carp caught over winter means less possible spawning in spring. The team will leave no stone unturned to remove all carp from Lake Sorell.
This week a brings a new challenge with heavy rain rapidly increasing the water level in Lake Sorell and Crescent bringing the them closer to the surrounding wetlands. The IFS team will be keeping a close eye on the water level and managing it to be sure there are no unwanted escapes.
