There is growing opposition to the proposed Needles Gap Dam on the Belubula River.

About 120 people attended a meeting in Orange on 18 November to hear Central West Environment Council president Cilla Kinross, Nature Conservation Council campaign manager Daisy Barham and Inland Rivers Network president Bev Smiles discussed the impact the dam would have on the Belubula and Lachlan Rivers and Basin

Bruce Welch from the Save Cliefden Caves Association discussed the threat to the limestone caves system and Neville Landcare Group chairwoman Lisa Paton discussed landholder impacts and concerns.

The Cliefden Caves (pictured above) are located on the Belubula River, New South Wales, between the towns of Carcoar and Canowindra, about 20 km east of Canowindra.

Proposals for water storages on the Belubula River date back more than half a century. Past proposed sites exist between Carcoar and Canowindra and several of these would adversely affect Cliefden Caves and surrounding areas. Any dam at these sites, would likely inundate most of the known caves, the thermal spring, and the internationally recognised fossil sites.
