Bluefin Jon boat
« on: December 05, 2013, 03:58:31 PM »
Has anyone fished out of a bluefin jon boat? Are they stable enough for 2 people to lure fish from in most conditions?

I had a 12' Clitrex Jon Punt and it scared me so much I sold it.  I had a couple of hairy days on North Pine, put the I got caught in some decent winds at Wivenhoe and had to get back from Platypus Cliffs to Billies Bay.  Must have been over 14 years ago because Billies was open back then.  I thought I was going to die that day.

I would not recommend going out in open waters if wind forecast is over 10 knots.
They have a relatively narrow beam compared to other punts .
Which model are you looking at?
All punts are quite fast in calm conditions but pound into a chop.
You can certainly stand and cast in them but have to be aware of bow waves etc if there are powered craft in the vicinity.
I had an 12ft dehaviland on NPD for a couple of years but always watched the weather forecast before I upgraded to something more beamy and higher sides.
In short they would be ok in skinny water but would not recommend for use in dams that allow unrestricted power boats. You always have to be aware that you have little free-board compared to other boats.
 Cheers
Ray.
