New fish hotels better than First Home Buyer's Grant for native fish in Myall Creek

While it may seem hard to break into the property market these days, native fish in Dalby are getting a helping hand to find a place to start their families thanks to the installation of 53 new fish hotels in the Myall Creek during July and August.
The fish hotels are the star feature of restoration works which also addressed long term stream bank erosion issues and were made possible due to a partnership between Western Downs Regional Council, Arrow Energy and Condamine Alliance.
Condamine Alliance Chief Executive Officer Phil McCullough praised local contractors for a job well done and the care they took of the Myall Creek Parklands during the works.
"The tight confines of the work space made for interesting conditions but local Jandowae contractor Usher Bobcats did a fantastic job while managing to avoid trees and public amenities," Mr McCullough said.
The 800 kg wooden structures were tied together with steel cable and anchored down with over 16 tonnes of cement blocks before being covered with 328 tonnes of rock and 225 tonnes of top soil.
"Most of the habitats were installed into the creek banks in the first two weeks with filling and revegetation works occurring over the last two weeks," Mr McCullough said.
"Inland systems are very important to local townships like Dalby as they support not only people but fish, birds, other wildlife, plants and trees.
"One of the interesting aspects of this project is the fact that the structures are dual purpose - stabilising and building up the creek bank while also providing cover and a greater food sources for the native fish.
"Specialists have carefully selected native reeds and rushes that will offer plenty of food for the fish and birds as well as adding root integrity to the banks."
Project partners Western Downs Regional Council, Arrow Energy and Condamine Alliance will host an official celebration of the restoration works at the Dalby Fishing Competition and Family Fun Day on 25 October at the Myall Creek Parklands.
"We have welcomed all the community questions and feedback along the project and look forward to celebrating with everyone in October," Mr McCullough said.
