Seqwater has welcomed five trainee rangers, the first intake employed by the business.

The trainees will assist Seqwater’s workforce of 28 rangers with their work in managing Seqwater’s land and recreation areas.

Seqwater Chief Executive Officer Peter Dennis said with more than 60,000 hectares to manage, land management was an important component of Seqwater’s core business.

“It takes skilled resources to manage our land effectively and our rangers do an excellent job,” Mr Dennis said.

“Employing trainees provides us with a unique opportunity to bring fresh eyes into our business. While learning, the trainees are encouraged to offer new ideas to improve the way we operate.

“The roles provide the opportunity for those interested in land management to gain valuable skills which are easily transferable to other agencies and industries.”

The Seqwater ranger is the star of a new campaign, Play it safe, which encourages visitors to plan ahead and consider their own safety when visiting the region’s dams, lakes and parks.

While Seqwater’s rangers regularly patrol the lakes and surrounding recreation areas, they can’t be everywhere so visitors are asked to do the right thing and follow a few simple rules.

Seqwater’s new trainee rangers will complete a Certificate III in Conservation and Land Management, while working alongside Seqwater’s rangers and undertaking safety and compliance training.

Mr Dennis said the job was ideal for people who enjoyed the outdoors.

“While it is physically demanding, it is also very rewarding. The diversity in the role is also attractive to many, as no two days are the same,” he said.

“Rangers perform a large range of tasks – everything from mowing and brushcutting, pest animal control, prescribed burns and fish rescues.

“They’re our people on the ground at our recreation areas – helping thousands of visitors ever year to stay safe while enjoying their time at the region’s lakes.”

The trainee rangers will learn how to respond to emergencies, maintain natural areas, prepare and apply chemicals, operate machinery and equipment, maintain properties and structures, and undertake sampling and testing of water.

Mr Dennis welcomed Seqwater’s newest recruits, guaranteeing them a diverse range of experiences.

“Being a ranger at Seqwater has the added benefit of being able to work in and around our beautiful lakes in South East Queensland. How many people can say they have an office with a view as good as our lakes!”

We met a few of the ladies at our last fish release at Wivenhoe.  They seemed eager to learn.

I ran into them again at Logans last time I went fishing. They were heading out on a patrol to check on speeding boaties. Good to see a few smiling faces on the dam.

What were they going to do if they caught any???

The ones that I have met have had a fisheries officer on board also.

They are still very thin on the ground with an average of a little over one ranger per dam.
 When Pine rivers shire had North Pine they had 5 rangers and always had one on duty over the weekend now I have been told that there is only one ranger on duty of a weekend to look after all dams.

I would see more than a couple at just Somerset & Wivenhoe on a weekend... I'm guessing your "info source" is full of it....... or maybe they're just making the most heavily used lakes (eg Somerset & Wivenhoe) the priority.

 Twice when I have reported 2 stroke boats on Hinze on a weekend I have been told that only one ranger on patrol for all dams.
