Title: Lake Kurwongbah changes.
Post by: aussiebasser on September 08, 2014, 05:51:50 PM
Dear stakeholder,

Seqwater is undertaking a major and more detailed water quality assessment of Lake Samsonvale to better understand what recreation could be accommodated into the future without impacting on water quality.

As you are aware, the initial water quality assessment of Lake Samsonvale indicated the lake would not be able to cope with any additional activity and as such a decision was made to allow paddling onto Lake Kurwongbah to deliver on review outcomes. This would have resulted in the Lake Kurwongbah Water Ski Zone club (LKWSZ), as well as Water Ski Queensland, being unable to continue to use the lake because of public safety concerns with skiers interacting with paddlers.

Seqwater has decided to allow existing activities to continue on both Lake Samsonvale and Lake Kurwongbah until the more detailed assessment is completed. The study will be one of the most comprehensive of its type ever undertaken in the country and is expected to take between 12-18 months.

Importantly the change will still result in the general community having majority access to Lake Kurwongbah using paddle craft for the first time since the dam was built.

Seqwater has been working closely with the existing users of Lake Kurwongbah to enable both club skiers and paddle craft to share the lake, resulting in the following:

•           Lake Kurwongbah will be open to the general public for paddle craft each week from Friday to Monday inclusive,

•           Waterski Queensland and the Lake Kurwongbah Water Ski Zone club will have use of the lake from Tuesday to Thursday inclusive,

•           The Lake Kurwongbah Water Ski Zone club will continue to have access to the lake for its annual charity events, and

•           The current arrangement for the existing rowing club will not be impacted.

Paddlers must launch from the designated launch point located at Mick Hanfling Park, and utilise the wash down facility provided to assist with the spread of aquatic weeds such as Cabomba, which is present in the lake. Club water skiers will continue with existing club wash down procedures.

Paddlers will have access from Monday 8 September, 2014 as previously advised. Skiing will recommence from Tuesday 7 October 2014 following the next school holidays. This will allow Seqwater to install the required signage and undertake public communication of the new arrangement.

Importantly this interim arrangement will remain in place until the new water quality assessment is completed.

Kind regards,

Seqwater Recreation Team
