FISHERS GEAR UP FOR LONG WEEKEND FISHING FUN

The State’s fishers are gearing up for the traditional start of the fishing season, this October long weekend, NSW Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson said today. Ms Hodgkinson said there is often a spike in recreational fishermen, who store their fishing gear over winter and become more active during the warmer months of spring and summer. Today Ms Hodgkinson visited Penrith where one of 50 Statewide school holiday fishing workshops was held for children in NSW between the ages of eight and fourteen. “Fishing is one of Australia’s most popular pastimes and it is great to see young children learning all the fishing tricks,” Ms Hodgkinson said. “The warmer weather sees fishers flock to local waterways with their families, so with the new skills learned during workshop the children will be more competitive with the adults.”

“This weekend also marks the NSW trout season officially opening in all NSW trout rivers. “Spring and summer are some of the best times for fishing, and we want everyone to enjoy themselves, safely and responsibly,” Ms Hodgkinson said. Fishermen are reminded to make sure they’re aware of the fishing rules and regulations, and to carry a valid NSW Recreational fishing licence.
Anyone found without a licence faces a $200 on the spot fine. Additionally, a penalty of $75 can apply if you do not have the licence in your immediate possession.
Rules for bag and size limits must be followed. While we encourage people to enjoy their time on the water, it is important for fishers to practice sustainable fishing techniques to preserve our precious fisheries resources.
NSW recreational fishing licences can be purchased at more than 1000 outlets including bait and tackle shops, some Kmart stores, online at www.licence.nsw.gov.au or by calling 1300 369 365.

Licence fees are:
 $7 - 3 days
 $14 - 1 month
 $35 - 1 year
 $85 - 3 years
