Easter fishers urged to pack a permit
News release | 20 March, 2013

Freshwater fishers gearing up for the Easter long weekend are reminded to check their stocked impoundment permit before wetting a line at their favourite fishing spot.

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol district officer Coby Walker said fishers needed a current permit to fish in freshwater lakes and dams on the Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS).

"The Easter long weekend is an ideal time for families and friends to enjoy some outdoor fun and this year is set to be a particularly good season with fish stocks thriving in many dams after the floods," Mr Walker said.

"Anglers of all ages and skill levels can enjoy fishing at a SIPS dam.

"You only need one permit per couple and those under 18 years of age can fish for free.

"Before packing up the family though, check the date on your permit and renew it if needed.

"It's easy to purchase or renew a permit online-just visit www.fisheries.qld.gov.au

"Permits cost just $37.30 for one year or $32.40 for concession card holders.

"Fisheries officers will be conducting patrols during the Easter break and those without a valid permit risk an on-the-spot fine of $220."

Mr Walker said fishing at a SIPS dam was a sustainable fishing option.

"Fishing at a SIPS dam means you will be helping to sustain native fish stocks, with 75 per cent of the funds from your permit going back into restocking the dams," he said.

"Enjoy the freshwater fishing experience this Easter, and don't forget to keep your permit on you at all times."
