Title: Dumaresq green and gold fever.
Post by: Junglefisher on April 05, 2012, 03:21:25 PM
Went for a trip down the Dumaresq from Cunningham wier today.
Launched downstream and got a cod hook up withing sight of launch but dropped it.
Got another good hit a while later, but no hook up. Then another.
Went past some people camping and didnt fish out front of their camp.
100m downstream but still in sight of them I got a good hit.
Cast back to the same spot and boy did I hook up. Got it to the yak fairly quickly, couple of minutes and could see she was a metre long.
Then she woke up and took me 20 minutes to get her tired enough to get the lip grips on. The lip grips were in the box behind my seat so it took some contortionism to get them out.
Then somehow, I lifted her into the yak. A good 20+ kg of fish into my Finn - it's only 60 odd cm wide!
I paddled over to the 3 campers who were watching the whole fight, they took a photo then my camera went flat :(
I marked her length on the yak and later measured at 1m. I really wish I'd had a proper tape there to get an exact measure. Not bad on 10lb main, 14lb leader and a 2500 reel, 2-5kg rod.
I used the paddle lots to keep her over the sandy side rather than into the snags.

I nearly went home after that, but kept going.
After seeing several yellas follow the big oar-gee lure, I changed to a Binner Spait for the upstream voyage.
This resulted in an almost immediate landing of a yella.
Then a small, ~45cm cod.
Then I had a good hit on a snag. I recast and landed an ~45cm cod. Same spot, I missed two more hits then hooked up. It took me right into the snags. I tried to get it out, but ended up out of the yak, standing on the snag and removing the offending piece of timber. The fish was still on and went ~57cm, would have been a pb 3 hours ago.
I got one more small (~40cm) cod on the way back.
Wow, what a day!

Very nice fish mate, and a good size for the Dumaresq, or anywhere else for that matter. Bit of a thrill seeker on the light gear tho.
Cheers,
JD

Went out again Monday with my brother. I picked up a 76cm, 62cm and 53cm cod and a 35cm yella. Brother got nothing unfortunately.
No pics as I forgot the camera.

Haven't seen any tags.

Would tags indicate stocked fish or just ones that have been caught before?

jungle fisher theres a group of us doing a study on the cod in the dumeraq river...and we have been tagging and measuring the fish to get a idea on growth rates..so if you do get one with a tag please take the length and roughly were it was caught and ring the no on tag with the nos on the tag..this is a ongoing research project and we need all the info we can get..cheers brett

Very nice fish mate! Sounds like you're gettin a few good ones!  :thumbsup

I'm interested to know how did she look swimming away? I've always wondered how those bigger cod handle the fight and if they release ok?
Cheers

No worries Brett, although the way things are going, the length may have to be a guestimate as I keep forgetting my measuring devices.
Would also be interested in assisting with tagging, is it a once a year kinda thing?

She swam away very strongly. Simply opened the lipgrips and she was off!!!! Only kept out of the water briefly. Freshwater fish can often survive decent periods of being out of the water but I really wanted to get her back in ASAP.

Craig,
Did it take long to get the fish to the 'yak on the light gear? Just wondering what sort of a fight you got out of her. I may end up leaving my 30lb braid and 40lb leader at home. Yes I know that's overkill for the Dumaraesq but I'm an optimist; you never know when the big one will grab your lure.

Took me a little over 20 minutes, maybe pushing 30. I checked the time when I hooked up and again when I landed her, but can't remember exactly. Call it 25 minutes.
No screaming runs, but definately a dogged fight. When she wanted to pull drag, she did.
I spent a bit of time paddling one handed to keep the fight to the sandy side of the river.
