Media release: Multiple fines to be issued for June fishing offences
15 June 12 - VIC Fisheries

A number of Melbourne men face large fines for committing a range of fisheries offences this month, including using a hand held spear to catch trout and attempting to catch fish with commercial fishing equipment.

One man was detected using a hand held spear and spotlight to catch trout in the Goulburn River between Alexandra and Thornton on June 1.

The man had his fishing gear confiscated and will be receiving a number of infringement notices.

Anglers are reminded that it is an offence to use or possess a hand held spear or spear gun to take fish from inland waters.

The following day Fisheries officers detected a group of men from Melbourne attempting to catch fish with a net from the Stevenson River at Buxton.

Fisheries officer Daniel Steel said it was an offence to both use and be in possession of commercial fishing equipment such as mesh nets

Mr Steel said recreational fishers found in possession of commercial equipment would have it seized and receive significant fines.

He said several Melbourne men were also apprehended over the Queens Birthday long weekend illegally using trout or salmon ova as bait or berley, taking fish from closed waters and fishing without a Recreational Fishing Licence.

Recreational anglers are urged to obtain a copy of the Victorian Recreational Fishing Guide and to read the Fishing Regulations prior to going fishing.

Mr Steel said overall the Queens Birthday long weekend saw a large number of anglers doing the right thing and enjoying the last weekend of the salmonid season with good numbers of both brown and rainbow trout taken from local rivers and streams and also Lake Eildon.

The salmonid closed season remains in place until the first weekend in September.

Anyone who sees or suspects illegal fishing activity is urged to call the 24-hour reporting line, 13FISH (13 3474).
