Wyangala works full steam ahead

Construction is well underway on the Wyangala Dam safety upgrade, with nearly half of the excavation for the new road and bridge complete.
Project team representatives from State Water, Public Works and John Holland met with designers from Aurecon on site on Wednesday, 24 April 2013.
State Water project manager Kock Ooi said 24,000 of the 50,000 cubic metres of earth had been excavated to make way for the new road and bridge.
"The clear weather has meant John Holland has been able to get a good start on excavation on the Trout Farm Road side of the river,” Mr Ooi said.
“They have also been busy establishing the site, finalising plans and setting up environmental controls,” he said.
Silt filtration measures are in place and noise and ground water monitoring systems have been established.
Safety, quality and environmental audits have been conducted to ensure the correct processes and procedures are being followed.
Local economic benefits are already starting to be realised with workers being employed from the area and contracts for sourcing materials locally being finalised.
The steelworks and brakes for the spillway gate raising system are being manufactured and that will continue over the coming weeks.
There is also more fencing, excavation and provision of access to various areas which will take place over the next month.
The disused toilet block at the northern viewing area will be demolished during the works as alternative toilet facilities are located at the park near the outlet valves below the dam wall.
The construction works are on track for completion in mid 2014.
