Talbots Lagoon - spawning run

On the weekend I, Fisheries Officer, Paul Middleton, joined some of the North West Fly Fishing Club at Talbots Lagoon to watch the spawning trout. We saw many spawning fish heading upstream and building beds in the cool, fast moving floodwaters that are flowing into the lagoon. We also saw a few rainbow trout, but they were most likely there to feed on eggs that didn’t make it to the spawning beds. The fish we saw were in fantastic shape, giving us great hope for the new angling season which start on Saturday the 6th of August.

Early in the season you can fish the lagoon using all methods. Fly anglers could explore the flooded edges of the lake for foraging fish. Spin anglers could fish the deeper shores around the north, including the dam wall. Bait anglers will do well all over the lagoon.

Talbot’s Lagoon is a world class fishery.  Being allowed to fish here is a privilege, not a right. It is possible thanks to the generosity of the land owner, Forico. When you’re here please, stick to the regulations and guidelines. So, no motorised boats on the lagoon, no camping in the area and please take your rubbish home with you.  There is great camping nearby at Waratah, phone 6439 7100.

All angling regulations are on signs at the lagoon or are can be found on the IFS website. A few people doing the wrong thing could stop access for all anglers to this great water. Please respect the rules, do the right thing and have a great 2016-17 season.
