Hi folks,
This is probably a standard type of query from all of us new members ( moderator, feel free to redirect this message to the newby box if necessary ! ).
I live in Cootamundra and my wife and I try to take our young grandkids out into the scrub ( anywhere away from the computer and the wii ) about once a month. We don't have access to a boat, just set up for 4wd camping and bank or shore fishing.
The last trip was to the Murrumbidgee at Jugiong, just down the road, and although the catch was just one carp, it was still counted as a succesful weekend.
I'm new to NSW and need to find out about a few other similar spots, with camping space and easily accessible fishing spots in south-western NSW.
I'm keen to hear from anyone with experience in this type of camping/fishing weekend outing .

Welcome Mick,
Lake Burrinjuck is not too far from you. Hire boats are about $75 for a full day (1/2 day may be more affordable). I haven't been there for over 40 years but it is a nice spot and reasonably close to you.
Good to see you taking the kids out for a look at the real Australia.

Thanks Dale, we had a look at Burrinjuck a few weeks ago, the state park and the private grounds, and the potential is there, but I'll pick a weekend when there aren't too many boats and jet skis around. I like it quiet !!

I am not that far from where you are , Near Tumut .
i can tell you there are a heap of great places to camp and have a relaxing fish with peace and quiet , although through the holiday season it does get busy ,
Just to name a few like The Juck , Blowering dam , Tantangara , Eucumbene , Jindabyne , 3 mile dam , down through Cabramurra ,you have Tumut ponds , Top end of Talbingo , I just love these places , the high country scenery is just brilliant , i cannot think of anywhere that comes even close to it .

You know I fished most of those places as a kid. Tumut Ponds was pretty special back then. Tantangra rings a bell, but I can't remember it. Many a freezing night was spent at Eucumbene too.

Yep they sure are special , Tantangara has a lot of beauty about it , the drive in is just brilliant , on a sad note one has the feeling that access will soon be a problem , just too many doing the wrong thing ,Just the usual , leaving a mess and not knowing the value of a shovel ,

Murrumbidgee River , Good fishing around Gundagai , Wagga , Cotter Campground , Brindabella Ranges ( Blue Range Camp ) Namadgi National Park , Corin Dam Orroral Camp ground , Mount Clear Camp ground , Billy Grace Reserve , Log Bridge Creeek , Ben Smith Campsite Jounama Pondage , Bago State Forest , Paddys River Dam , Yarrangobilly Caves ( GREAT HOT WATER POOL HERE the grandkids will love and great fishing for heaps of small trout in the cold waters of Yarrangobilly Creek ! :youbeauty

Unfortunately the State Park gave away the hire boats some years ago. The old hire boat marina area is now the dirt launching ramp. Seems the insurances were beyond the pale given the modern predilection for litigation. Pity: I hired many a boat there in early days.
I'd second the Eucumbene recommendation. Angler's Reach has a good camping area under new management and they still hire decent Savage Snipes with 8hp Tohatsus - a mate paid $105 for the day last week in January when we were there. Lake's slowly rising and so much grass into the water. Bank fishing might be rewarding of an evening / night.

We had to drag them kicking and screaming away from the Wii, the Nintendo DS and the 100" TV screen. We took tent, bedding and bikes, food and water, and fishing gear, no electronics more complicated than a torch, and now the eternal question is "When are we going camping again ?"
I think it's a step in the right direction !!

Well, it took long enough to get around to finding the time to cast a line again - work and renovations take precedence !
Finally headed for the water, thanks to Easter visitors who wanted to go fishing. My planned explorations haven't happened yet, so we examined the map and headed for the Tumut river, which was pleasant and scenic, but mostly only about 30 cm deep and apparently devoid of fish. We met a lot of other hopefuls, but saw no fish caught, so pulled the pin and headed back towards Jugiong, scene of a previous triumph over a carp !
Had a couple of shy bites, but no luck, so off home empty-handed. (Wrong time of day, wrong bait, wrong guys on the back end of the rods .)
After the visitors left my wife and I decided the situation needed a lot more research, so we headed back into the Kosciuscko Nat Park and explored a little further, ending up at Jounama Pondage.
This is a spot I'll definitely take the grandkids to - there's good facilities in Talbingo, and comfy fishing spots within sight of the town - and I caught a couple of nice Redfin, that helps !!
I managed to run foul of the Rangers earlier in the day, fishing in the wrong spot near Jounama Dam, but the 'No Fishing' signs had been removed by previous campers, so I avoided the threatened $500 fine and gained some handy advice about where my luck might improve. Thanks, Rangers ! :thanks
